Born in Brooklyn, New York, Hathaway studied acting at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and at a pre-college summer program at the Collaborative Arts Project in affiliation with New York University. While training with the Paper Mill, she performed in a number of plays including Gigi, Jane Eyre, Life on Earth and Once Upon a Mattress (for which she earned a nomination for Rising Star Award)
